Health and Nutrition
At Kellogg Canada, we promote eating well and healthy living. Our legacy is based on the philosophy that people can improve their health with a well-rounded dietary approach and engaging in regular physical activity. Living a healthy lifestyle begins with a good understanding of nutrition. We believe in providing high-quality, nutritious food and helping educate consumers about the benefits of a healthy diet.
Kellogg Canada is committed to staying current with scientific advances in nutrition and food research by collaborating with academia, health agencies and various levels of government around the country to communicate the importance of a balanced diet and increased physical activity. Kellogg research and development teams are continuously developing new products, and reformulating existing ones, to keep pace with scientific advances in health and wellness.
In 2009, we announced plans to add fibre to many of our ready-to-eat cereals in Canada and the United States. While there is consistent, strong evidence that diets higher in fibre help reduce the risk of a number of health issues (digestive health including regularity, weight management, diabetes, heart disease and cancer), Canadians are not meeting the recommended adequate intake levels of fibre in their diets. Kellogg is committed to addressing this important need. Already, Kellogg Canada has more ready-to-eat cereals that are at least a source of fibre than any other food company, including All-Bran*, Kellogg's Two Scoops Raisin Bran*, Mini-Wheats*, Special K* Satisfaction* and Multigrain Krispies* cereals (Nielson GB+MM+DRU, latest 52 weeks ending March 12, 2009. Based on 42% share of RTEC cereals that qualify as source, high source and/or very high source of fibre).
This initiative follows other recent product renovations to reduce sugar and sodium and remove trans fats, and is part of our continuing journey to improve the nutrition credentials of our foods.
We believe the notion of balance – or "calories in, calories out" – must remain the central tenet of any long-term solution to obesity and weight management. Our role at Kellogg Canada is to give consumers the tools they need to make informed dietary choices for themselves and for their families. We offer a range of products to meet consumers' desires to have great-tasting alternatives in their diet. We also encourage parents and teachers to promote active and healthy lifestyles in children through programs such as Mission Nutrition*.
Since 2005, Kellogg Canada has also been a proud supporter of Active Healthy Kids Canada, sponsoring their annual Report Card on Physical Activity for Children and Youth - a report designed to offer insight into how well the country provides physical activity opportunities for young people. In 2010, Kellogg Canada was a sponsor of the 3rd International Congress on Physical Activity and Public Health held in Toronto.

The Kellogg Nutrition Symposia
The Registered Dietitians and Nutrition Professionals at Kellogg Canada host scientific Symposia at the annual conferences for Dietitians of Canada, the Canadian Association of Cardiac Rehabilitation and the Canadian Nutrition Society.
First held in 1976, Kellogg Nutrition Symposia present research and emerging trends in nutrition and health that are of value and interest to Canadians and health professionals alike. At each Symposium, emerging and relevant scientific information on a variety of nutrition and health topics are presented from leading scientists and nutrition experts. Attendees leverage the practical and relevant tools provided at each Symposium to further meet the evolving needs of clients in their own practice.

The Importance of Breakfast
As the world's leading producer of cereals, Kellogg understands the importance of breakfast for people of all ages, for fuelling the body and brain for the day's activities, and for maintaining a healthy weight. It's especially important that children eat a nutritious breakfast. Scores of studies around the globe have consistently shown that kids who eat breakfast have more physical and mental energy than those who do not. Breakfast eaters are also more likely to have healthier body weights, greater vitamin and mineral intakes, and better memory skills, to name just some of the benefits corroborated by researchers.
In Canada, our ready-to-eat-cereals offer consumers a nutritious way to start the day. In fact, Kellogg's* cereals are a mainstay in more than 77 per cent of Canadian homes (according to an IPSOS Reid RTEC 2009 Consumption Report).
Ready-to-eat cereals supply B-vitamins and minerals, such as iron and zinc, which are essential for healthy growth and development. Milk boosts those benefits with additional calcium and vitamins D, A and B12. We fortify our cereals and other products keeping Canadian laws and regulations and the nutrient intakes and needs of consumers in mind.
Kellogg Canada is a member of the Breakfast Cereal Manufacturers of Canada (BCMC), an industry association which serves as the voice of breakfast cereals in Canada and how they can be a healthy part of the Canadian diet.
